Catherine Deneuve Retrospective |
To mark the re-opening of Ciné lumière, we are deeply honoured to welcome on 9 January Catherine Deneuve, a film-star of international reknown, one of the most beautiful women in the world, and one of the best-respected actresses in the French film industry. Catherine Deneuve is unique in the annals of cinema. Over the course of her long career, she has worked in diverse genres and taken every imaginable risk. Forever in search of new emotions, she has acted with the greatest directors (Buñuel, Truffaut, Polanski, Demy, Téchiné...) and has also ventured into the more intimate world of cinéma d’auteur (Ferreri, Ruiz, de Oliveira, Carax, Dupeyron).
This season shows her in a selection of her greatest roles, from ‘the ingénue in pigtails and beret’ in Tristana , to the disillusioned parent and frustrated wife of My Favourite Season , the philosophy teacher consumed by a fatal passion in Thieves and the all-singing all-dancing matron in Ozon's 2002 musical-cum-melodrama-cum-comedy-cum-murder mystery 8 Women.

Catherine Deneuve has changed cinema forever. She changed everything. Over and above her work as an actress, her grand idea if what cinema should be has refreshed and reconfigured our vision'. Arnaud Desplechin, Les Inrockuptibles, 2004 Sunday 11 January |
