MICHAEL HANEKEA retrospective in contextFor almost two decades, Austrian director Michael Haneke, one of the most renowned figures in contemporary film, has pleaded for a cinema of insistent questions as opposed to an industry of false answers. With this provocative and often controversial approach, Haneke intends to involve, challange his viewers, rather than to reduce them to mere picture consumers.
Ahead of the UK release of his tenth film, Funny Games, an English language remake of his 1997 production of the same title, the Austrian Cultural Forum London CiNECLUB in collaboration with Ciné lumière and Tartan Films , takes pleasure in presenting a complete programme of Michael Haneke’s feature films.
Haneke, who was a film critic in the late 1960s and is a passionate cinemagoer to this day, often reflects on, and plays with, the medium itself dissecting its mechanisms and taking on its tendency to dumb down complex issues. Against this backdrop, we considered it fitting to complement the retrospective with twelve titles by other directors, inasmuch as they could be seen as relevant in relation to Michael Haneke’s oeuvre. | |
