Led by Jonathan Romney | Belgium/England/France | 2006 | 119 mins | dir. François Ozon, with Romola Garai, Sam Neill, Lucy Russell, Michael Fassbender, Charlotte Rampling
Adapted from a novel by British writer Elizabeth Taylor, itself inspired by the life of writer Marie Corelli and set in Edwardian England, Angel is 'a rags-to-riches melodrama in the high style'. (Jonathan Romney). It recounts the glorious rise of Angel Deverell, a poor but passionately determined young woman, who climbs the social ladder by becoming a celebrated romantic novelist, the Babara Cartland of her time. Ozon's first English language feature after Swimming Pool's mix of English and French, Angel stars the young Romola Garai (Vanity Fair) as the titular heroine, Ozon-regular Charlotte Rampling (Swimming Pool) as well as Lucy Russell, Michael Fassbender and Sam Neill.
