The film was part of the selection of the very first edition of the Cannes Film Festival in 1939 which never happened as WWII broke out. Legend tells that on New Year’s Eve, Death itself is on the look out for a new driver for it’s phantom wagon. Only the hapless man who dies at the last stroke of midnight will be summoned to carry out this sinister task. Pierre Fresnay is remarkable as harddrinking bully David haunted by his unfortunate buddy and victim Georges, the ghostly carriage driver.
