Austria/France/Germany | 2012 | col | dir. Michael Haneke, with Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Hupert
Haneke’s Palme d’Or winner focuses on Georges and Anne, an octogenarian couple of cultivated, retired music teachers. Their daughter (Isabelle Huppert), who is also a musician, lives abroad with her family. One day, Anne has a stroke which leaves her partly paralysed and with progressive dementia. Having promised her that he would never put her in a home, Georges is placed under the increasing strain of caring for her at home. The couple’s bond of love is severely tested. An intense, uncompromising and sensitive drama with touches of exquisite lyricism, supported by impressive performances by Jean-Louis Trintignant and Emmanuelle Rivera.
