Veteran director Bernardo Bertolucci’s first film since The Dreamers in 2003 takes him back to the turbulence of youth. Lorenzo is a quirky 14-year-old loner who has difficult relationships with his parents and peers. He decides to take a break from it all by hiding out in his family’s neglected basement. No one has a clue that clever Lorenzo will actually be abandoning a school ski trip to be alone. For an entire week, he will finally avoid all conflict and pressure to be a ‘normal’ teenager. Away for years, his older half-sister unexpectedly plummets into the small basement room in search of some forgotten possessions. A worldy 25-year-old beauty, her problematic and fragile state upsets Lorenzo’s total escape from reality. Their forced cohabitation in the confined space brings forth confrontation and old resentments, but also a need for affection and intimacy.
Please note that the screening scheduled for Friday 19 Apr, 8.40pm has been moved to 6.15pm and will be followed by a Q&A with director Bernardo Bertolucci.
