Chile/France/USA | 2012 | col | dir. Pablo Larraín, with Gael García Bernal, Alfredo Castro, Luis Gnecco, Antónia Zegers, Marcial Tagle
Bernal is a cynical young advertising executive, Rene Saavedra, who is asked to spearhead the ‘No’ campaign for those opposing the Pinochet regime to bring democracy to Chile. With scant resources, constant scrutiny from individuals sympathetic to Pinochet’s totalitarian regime including ad agency colleagues and the secret police, this bold, enthralling film looks at how a team of Chile’s ‘Mad Men’ and opponents of the dictatorial regime instigated change. Seamlessly blending scripted scenes with archive footage, No is a compelling period piece which made it one of the most talked about films at the BFI London Film Festival in 2012.
Nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film
Please note that the screening on Thu 14 Feb will start at 4pm and not at 3pm as wrongly announced in the Institut’s bi-monthly programme. We do apologise for the mistake.
