France | 2011 | col | dir. Bruno Dumont, with David Dewaele, Alexandra Lematre, Valérie Mestdagh
Bruno Dumont’s latest film is beautifully shot in a protected area on the coast of Northern France, in a world of sand dunes, woods and marshes. By the Channel, along the Côte d’Opale, lives a man who struggles along, poaches, prays and builds fires, and a girl from a local farm who takes care of him and feeds him. Together they mysteriously engage in private prayer at the edge of the ponds, where the devil is prowling… A series of supernatural events and violent deaths disturbs their contemplative life, and reveals the unseen side of the village loner.
