Graffiti artist, filmmaker and sometime musician Jean-Michel Basquiat was a major star on the 80s New York art scene before his death, aged 27, from a heroin overdose. A true insider's view of events (painter-turned-director Schnabel was a close friend and rival) the film features a soundtrack compiled from Basquiat's own record collection (Tom Waits, Iggy Pop, Charlie Parker) and a cast drawn from among his former acquaintances and collectors, including David Bowie as Andy Warhol and Dennis Hopper as the Swiss dealer Bruno Bischofberger.
