La notte

France/Italy | 1960 | b&w | 122 mins | dir. Michelangelo Antonionii, with Marcello Mastroianni, Jeanne Moreau, Monica Vitti

The second film in Antonioni’s celebrated 'trilogy', La notte can be seen as his cool riposte to Fellini’s exuberant portrait of the decadent, idle rich in La dolce vita. Moving from a hectic Milan afternoon through an all-night debauch to a tentative dawn, the story centres on a successful novelist (Mastroianni), who is losing his desire to write, and his disaffected wife (Moreau), who is losing her desire to desire.
