Olivier Roy is one of the most distinguished analysts of and commentators on political Islam in the Muslim Middle East and Central Asia. In this new book he seeks to restore the individual logic and dynamics of the conflict of the Middle East, the better to understand the widespread political discontent that sustains them. Instead of two opposed sides, an ‘us’ and a ‘them’, he warns that the West faces an array of 'reverse alliances'.

The author of several highly acclaimed books, two of which are published by Hurst (Globalised Islam and Islamist Networks), Olivier Roy is a researcher at CERI in Paris. His Failure of Political Islam (1996) is now a classic text.
