Desert Dream / Hyazgar

Mongolia | 2007 | col | 123 mins |dir. Zhang Lu, with Osor Bat-Ulzii, Dong-Ho Shin, Suh Jung

Zhang Lu's latest film, a darkly comic, enigmatic drama, is set on the Mongolian Steppes. Hungai dreams of transforming the encroaching desert into a forest and dedicates all his time to planting trees. His quest leaves him blind to his ailing daughter's plight, compelling his wife to take her to the capital for treatment. He is alone in his yurt when two North Korean refugees, a mother and son, appear on the threshold. Desert Dream begins documentary-style, immersing us in the everyday rhythms of life on the steppes, but gradually touches of magic realism collect around the characters, as well as hints of an even crueler and more dangerous world that lies beyond the dunes.
