How is your fish today ? / Jin Tian De Yu Zen Me yang?
China/UK | 2006 | col | 83 mins | dir. Xiaolu Guo, with Xiaolu Guo, Ning Hao, Hui Rao, Zijiang Yang
Working on his latest screenplay in Beijing, Hui Rao is suffering from serious writers block, shuffling round his flat and furiously chain-smoking as his plants die around him. His character, a young man running from his past, leaves southern China for the icy outpost of Mohe, China's most northern point. Rao questions Lin Hao's motivations for escape, yet is inspired to make the journey to Mohe himself...
Blurring the lines between the real and the imaginary, and between fictional and documentary filmmaking, How is your fish today? Is a though-provoking and strikingly beautiful inquiry into the uses and possibilities of narratives.
Director and writer Xiaolu Guo will be in conversation with writer Paul Fournel about her film and last two novels: A Concise-Chinese-English Dictionary For Lovers and 20 Fragments of A Ravenous Youth, both published by Chatto & Windus.
