I am from Titov Veles  / Jas Sum Od Titov Veles

Macedonia | 2007 | col | 102 mins | dir. Teona Mitveska, with Labina Mitevska, Ana Kostovska, Nikolina Kujaca

Titov Veles is a small factory town in Macedonia struggling to escape the legacy of the past:  the 'Titov' may have been officially dropped from the name – it refers to the dictator Tito – but everyone still calls it Tito Veles. The film's protagonists, sisters Afrodita, Sapho and Slavica, face a similar predicament: all three want something better than the lives they've been given, but, inhabiting a shattered landscape failed by both communism and capitalism, they find the past is never easy to escape, even with the help of one's sisters. Director Mitevska mines beauty from even the toughest situations and settings, thanks to a touch of magic realism and a dark sense of humour.
