Slam, which started in the late eighties in the US, has become increasingly fashionable in France. It features a broad range of voices, styles, cultural traditions, and approaches to writing and performance. Informal groups get together for writing workshops and present their work to the public, usually in the form of a verbal sparring match. Slam can be sung a capella, in a spirit of exchange and performance. Close to rap, it can also have musical accompaniments. Launched by the success of Grand Corps Malade and Abd Al Malik, Slam is now recognised as a genuine form of poetic expression.

Slam : your experience
On 24th May, Frédéric Nevchehirlian will hold an open workshop. During the first part, Fred will explain what Slam is, its codes, techniques etc... After this participants will prepare their own piece/pieces according to their own inspiration. A public rendition will then follow.

The workshop is experimental, open and unrestricted. All levels of French as well as a mix of English and French are welcome.
