In an unnamed location in an inderterminate time, Jacob von Gunten enrols in the dilapidated Institute Benjamenta, whose sole purpose seems to be instill humility in prospective civil servants. At first he submits to the discipline, but begins to dream of liberating the owner's sister from her suffocating existence within the Institute's walls.
