Known for its work in 20 countries in crisis, French charity Bibliothèques sans Frontières provides local action groups with books, expertise, and technical assistance to establish libraries and documentation centres in the field. Historian and founder Patrick Weil will be discussing issues of culture and development with Martyn Wade, chair of CILIP (Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals), and presenting recent projects such as ‘Ideas Box’ and portable libraries. Acclaimed author Ian McEwan will also do us the honour of joining the panel and giving a writer’s perspective to the debate on culture and development, along with Lisa Appignanesi, author and former president of English PEN and Kenan Malik, broadcaster and author of “The Quest for a Moral Compass”.
