Simone de Beauvoir in conversation. Book Launch
30 nov 2009

(63 mins)
Beauvoir

The Second Sex, in its newly translated, unabridged edition is about to come out, 60 years after its first appearance in France. Its translators, Constance Borde and Sheila Malovany-Chevallier, spoke about the intense four years they spent working on it. The Second Sex is one of France's most widely read books in English and certainly the one that has had the most far reaching impact on the world. Simone de Beauvoir's seminal work weaves together history, philosophy, economics, biology, and a host of other disciplines, commonly known in France as "culture générale." Sheila Malovany-Chevallier and Constance Borde have lived in France for over forty years, writing books and teaching at Sciences Po. They shared their fascinating adventure into the worlds of translating and publishing, and especially their foray into the multi-faceted mind of Simone de Beauvoir.
