A group of Ethiopian political activists set up a micro-bank and persuade a group of poor peasant women from a village south of Addis Ababa to borrow a small sum of money, enough to support them or to develop a new more lucrative activity. One invests in an American hen and all looks hopeful until it is mistakenly killed by poison laid for the rats that had been stealing its eggs. As the women struggle to make the loan repayments, doubts grow about the programme and its founders are led to rethink their ideological principles.
