‘ZOLA AND THE PARIS HE LIVED IN’

Exploring the exciting worlds of the French capital during the Second Empire, the Commune and the beginnings of the Third Republic, Zola and other writers – chroniclers of the city, its politics, its vices and virtues, its modernity.
Paris has always had a mythic status : Commercial and Artistic Capital – the vibrant centre of the French State. Conscious of its past and witness to the newest developments – Les Halles, the Grands Boulevards, the Railways, the Department Stores – Paris, the engine of progress and corruption, temptation and ambition, a vast machine where individuals are pitted against the anonymous masses of the great city.

Conferences at the Institut Français

Year 2009 - 2010

• 4 October: 'Pélerinage de Médan': Members will meet at St Lazare Station around 9.45am, to catch a train for Villennes, then walk to Médan and have a lunch by the River Seine, followed by the 'Pélerinage' at 3pm at Emile Zola's House.

• Friday 2 December: AGM, followed by a talk and drinks. This year, on December 11, Martine Le Blond Zola will give an illustrated talk on her great grand-father Emile Zola, his family and friends.

• Friday 22 January 2010, 6pm, at the French Institute, a talk by Dr Russell Cousins (University of Birmingham),, "Zola's soundtracks: an examination of the uses of sound in selected novels".

• Saturday 27 February 2010, 2-6pm, at the French Institute: A Seminar on Zola and his contemporaries (more details later, please check the website). 

• In April (sometimes early May, depending on the Easter Holiday): our annual dinner, ‘Avec Zola à table’ makes a highly enjoyable climax to our year.

• At the end of June/early July: an outing in the footsteps of Zola (Crystal Palace, Henley, Hatfield, etc.) or a lecture.
