USA | 1957 | dir. Sidney Lumet, with Henry Fonda
Sidney Lumet’s gripping courtroom drama, winner of the Golden Bear in Berlin, follows the deliberation of the jury in a murder trial. As the dozen men try to reach a unanimous decision, one juror (Henry Fonda) casts considerable doubt on elements of the case. Personal issues soon rise to the surface, and conflict threatens to derail the delicate process that will decide a boy’s fate.
The screening on Tue 10 Sept is followed by a Q&A with Richard Horwell QC and Antoine Vey, lawyer at the Paris Bar. They will debate around the theme of truth in a criminal trial. How to convince the jury? Can one lie in court? How to defend a guilty person?
A graduate of a Master of Arts (Law) from Cambridge University, which awarded him the William Senior Prize for law in 2006, Antoine Vey, a partner in the firm founded by Eric Dupond-Moretti, regularly intervenes in high profile criminal cases in France.
Richard Horwell QC was Treasury Counsel from 1991 to 2006 during which he prosecuted many high profile cases involving murder and terrorism. He is also regularly instructed to advise on independent inquiries.
