Jacques Becker lovingly evokes the Belle Epoque Parisian demimonde in this classic tale of doomed romance. At the turn of the century in Paris, Manda, an honest carpenter, drawn into a world of pimps, prostitutes and petty crooks falls for gangster’s doll Marie provoking an underworld rivalry that inexorably leads to treachery and tragedy. Signoret excels as the woman troubled by her desires, juggling her dangerous relationships with criminals. This elegant masterwork won Simone Signoret the BAFTA for Best Actress in 1953.
