This classic musical comedy drama is set amidst the shimmering nightlife of late 19 th century Paris and is arguably the finest of Renoir’s studies of the uneasy relationship between life and theatre. Jean Gabin stars as theatre impresario Henri Danglard, who plans to base his new club – the Moulin Rouge – around a modern reinvention of traditional cancan dancing. He hires pretty young washerwoman Nini with a view to harnessing her natural talents and making her the star of the show. But Henri’s attraction to Nini soon ignites the jealousy of his belly dancer lover Lola.
