Heavy with political subtext, Robert Guédiguian’s Marius et Jeannette is yet a tender and humane comedy. Ariane Ascaride is outstanding as Jeannette, the gutsy workingclass mother of two – but each from a different father – trying to make ends meet in the depression-hit port of L’Estaque. An unlikely love affair develops with Marius, a security guard with an obscure past, until he abruptly ends it. Will Jeannette ever be happy again?
