La Tortue Rouge

80 mins

JAP/FRA | 2016 | dir. Michaël Dudok de Wit | animation

Through the story of a shipwrecked sailor on a tropical island inhabited by turtles, crabs and birds, The Red Turtle evokes the main stages of the life of a human being, paradoxically struck by isolation and freedom. Presented in Cannes Un Certain Regard selection and nominated at the Oscars, it is the first international collaboration for famed Japanese animation house Studio Ghibli with UK-based Dutch animator Michaël Dudok de Wit. The magical realism is heightened by the stunning artwork and the haunting soundtrack by Laurent Perez del Mar which captures both the intimacy and grandiose nature of the narrative.

This screening is part of One World Unspoken, a short season curated by Yvonne Wootton, MA Student in Film Studies, Programming and Curating, in partnership with the National Film and Television School, The Genesis and Ciné Lumière.
