After her 1930s-set Planetarium, writer-director Rebecca Zlotowski returns to the present with this coming-of-age tale set in and around a sun-baked Cannes. Newcomer Mina Farid is terrific as 16-year-old Naïma, who finds herself spending a summer with older cousin Sofia, whose assertively sexual image attracts the attention of two older men – a wealthy Brazilian yacht owner (Nuno Lopes) and his friend/gofer (Benoît Magimel). Sofia is vividly played by model and lingerie designer Zahia Dehar, whose own past as a figure of tabloid scandal gives the film an acute focus in its examination of contemporary female sexuality and its attendant images. With terrific supporting performances from Clotilde Courau and ‘Riley’ Lakdhar Dridi, An Easy Girl is also an intimate, witty, visually dazzling story about desire, friendship and pleasure.
Preceded by an introduction and followed by a Q&A with director Rebecca Zlotowski.
