Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 50th Anniversary

The Directors’ Fortnight was born in the wake of 1968 and the cancellation of the Cannes Film Festival that year. Many young French filmmakers thought then that the stagnating Cannes Film Festival should be reformed. To overturn the resistant authorities of the festival, those film directors found necessary to create another festival on the fringe.

With the common positioning of promoting independent cinema and emergent new talents, but also freedom of creation and cultural diversity, the Institut français and Directors’ Fortnight have shared for a long time the same values. They have joined forces to celebrate this 50th anniversary worldwide and in London at Ciné Lumière with a special programme presented in partnership with Mubi.
