David Byrne’s American Utopia played to record-breaking audiences at the Hudson Theatre in NYC. Byrne teamed up with 11 musicians from around the world to perform songs from his 2018 eponymous along with classics from Talking Heads. The show drew raves for its design, musicality and political urgency – covering themes ranging from democracy, Black Lives Matter as well as civic and cultural engagement.
Spike Lee proves the perfect cinematic foil as director, keeping the approach spare and focussed but never two-dimensional. This is a joyful moment of musical ebullience, with Spike Lee lending yet another layer to the show’s strong political relevance.
