An influential Parisian lawyer agrees to defend a young twenty-year-old woman pro bono. Thanks to his help, she walks free from the hold-up charges against her – although she is guilty – and she becomes his mistress… Claude Autan-Lara’s film, inspired by George Simenon’s novel, caused quite a stir when it came out in 1957, in part due to the nude scenes which were deemed scandalous at the time. The film features the on-screen match made in heaven between Jean Gabin, a giant of French cinema, and Brigitte Bardot at the height of her fame, playing two characters who couldn’t be more different: he is a thoughful, confident, successful man who cannot break free from the conventions of his social milieu, while she is a young, carefree and daring deliquent.
