Festivals & Series
The doors of night are being opened wide at Ciné Lumière this autumn. Together with Ginette Vincendeau (Professor in Film Studies at King’s College and contributor to Sight & Sound) we have picked seven classics that best exemplify the film noir à la française.
From Marcel Carné’s Les Portes de la nuit (here in a newly restored version) to mythical Louis Malle’s Ascenseur pour l’échafaud, these capital movies make it clear that French masters are every bit as good as American ones when it comes to lethal love and refined murders, misty docks and smoky rooms.
Besides, who would not fall for this golden age of French acting? Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Lino Ventura, Brigitte Bardot, Alain Delon, Jeanne Moreau… all the great ones are here.
