One of the most important German graphic artists, Hans Hillmann designed posters for many famous films from the 1950s through to the 1970s, films by revered directors such as Robert Bresson, René Clair, Jean-Luc Godard and Luis Buñuel. With his bold, daring creations, he transformed the art of film poster design.
Hans Hillmann died last May. In tribute, Kemistry Gallery will hold an exhibition of Hillmann’s film posters (21 August – 27 September). This will be the first presentation of his work in the UK and it will give a full overview of his career and the evolution of his style.
To accompany the exhibition, the Institut français and the Goethe-Institut in London will show a selection of films that Hans Hillmann designed posters for. The programme will include well-known classics as well as little-seen and lost masterpieces and will demonstrate the lasting power of Hillmann’s designs, which fifty years after they were created, are still bringing new audiences to exciting films.
