FRA | 1934 | dir. Jean Vigo, with Michel Simon, Jean Dasté, Dita Parlo | music by Maurice Jaubert

This sensuous hymn to liberation follows the ups and downs of a young married couple: a barge captain and a country girl. When their domestic quarters prove too confining, it takes first mate ‘Père Jules’ (Michel Simon) to bring them back together. Suffused with fevered, dream-like exoticism and music by Maurice Jaubert, L’Atalante was a major inspiration to Nouvelle Vague directors.

Followed by a discussion with Nick Walker (Rochester Kino Cinema Club)

The film will be screened on a rare 35mm print
