One World Unspoken

Safe Journey

103 mins

FRA | 1992 | dir. Tony Gatlif

Tony Gatlif explores the concept of otherness and belonging with a musical odyssey following the journey of Romani people from east to west as they adapt to different environments and experience being the ‘other’ in someone else’s land.  Using diegetic music and traditional dance, the film shows young and old celebrating the cultural values of family, love, loneliness, and persecution whilst the seasons become a backdrop to their nomadic lifestyle.  Travelling across the landscapes of India, Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, France and Spain, the only constant in their culture is the continuous voyage comparable to that of migrating birds.

The screening will be introduced by Garth Cartwright, author of Princes Amongst Men: Journeys with Gypsy Musicians (2011)

Tue 26 Oct 6pm

This screening is part of One World Unspoken, a short season curated by Yvonne Wootton, MA Student in Film Studies, Programming and Curating, in partnership with the National Film and Television School, The Genesis and Ciné Lumière.
