FRA | 1972 | dir. Luis Buñuel, with Fernando Rey, Delphine Seyrig, Stéphane Audran

This Oscar-winning comedy of manners, written by Jean-Claude Carrière, sends an elegant cast of six middle-class people on an increasingly frustrating – and bizarrely eventful – search for a meal. Buñuel, who never hid his sympathies for the spirit of May 68, surrealistically skewers the conventions of society and offers a wicked social satire, turning the establishment, from the police forces to the politicians, into criminals.
