UK | 2019 | dir. Steve McQueen with Malachi Kirby, Darcus Howe and Letitia Wright

Steve McQueen’s rousing, urgent story of the Mangrove Nine is one of five in the Oscar-nominated director’s SMALL AXE anthology series for the BBC – five distinct films set in London’s West Indian community between the 1960s and 1980s.
With police targeting Mangrove Restaurant, a West Indian community hub in Notting Hill, local residents and activists take to the streets in protest. Arrested for inciting a riot, their 1970 trial lasted 55 days and exposed endemic racism in policing and the judicial process. 50 years later, McQueen’s propulsive courtroom drama feels as relevant as ever, and stars Malachi Kirby as British Black Panther founder, activist and later broadcaster, Darcus Howe and Letitia Wright at the heart of the film as a fierce, defiant leader, Altheia Jones.

Tickets for the cinema screenings of Mangrove on Wednesday 7 October will be free but ticketed. Booking opens on 1 October – watch this space for details.
