Spain/Portugal | 2019 | COL | dir. Benito Zambrano, with Luis Tosar, Luis Callejo, Jaime López | London premiere
Nominated for five Goya Awards in 2020, winner of two, including Best Adapted Screenplay, and based on Jesús Carrasco’s novel of the same name, Out in the Open tells the story of a child groomed by a farm forman who’s dared to escape his oppressive, impoverished life. Set in 1946 post-war Spain, while avoiding those in pursuit of him, the boy meets El Moro, a moral, lonely shepherd, that offers him protection, an encounter that will change both their destinies.
Shot in the Altiplano de Granada, Zambrano’s thriller is also a western, exquisitely framed by cinematographer Pau Esteve Birba.
