Patrice Chéreau the Magnificent

Festivals & Series

Actor, director, scriptwriter, opera and theatre stage director, Patrice Chéreau quickly reached, almost despite himself, the status of living icon. His films made him known to the general public and catapulted him to the forefront of the international scene, but it’s with his work as an opera and theatre stage director that his genius was fully exposed in the 70s. For forty years, the man whose greatest fear was to have to repeat himself never ceased to amaze audiences with his artistic choices, his keen sense of image and innovative take on classic texts, magnified by the extraordinary physicality of his actors.

His death leaves us bereft, which is why the Institut français would like to pay tribute to that extraordinary artist with screenings of four works that have had a tremendous impact on the history of performing arts and cinema.

The Young Vic, in collaboration with the Royal Opera House and the Institut français, will also pay homage to Chéreau on 15 December with Patrice Chéreau: A Celebration, a tribute from his friends and colleagues, with excerpts from his films, opera and stage productions.
