FRA/GRE | 1962 | dir. Jules Dassin, with Melina Mercouri, Anthony Perkins, Raf Vallone
In this re-imagining of Euripides’ tragedy Hippolytus, Jules Dassin directs his future wife Melina Mercouri in the eponymous role of Phaedra, a woman overwhelmed by passions she cannot control. After marrying a wealthy shipping magnate, Phaedra falls in love with her new husband’s son from his first marriage, igniting a catastrophic sequence of treachery and betrayal. Alongside the film’s classic melodrama, Phaedra provides a scathing critique of the super-rich and is sumptuously shot in striking black and white.
