“Fitting tribute to Master filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci who passed away in 2018 with this screening of an early masterpiece” – Adrian Wootton, curator of Cinema Made in Italy, CEO of Film London and the British Film Commission
Based on Alberto Moravia’s eponymous novel, The Conformist, Bernardo Bertolucci’s film traces the life of Marcello Clerici (Jean-Louis Trintignant) in a series of flashbacks giving light on his troubled psyche and integration into the Fascist system. Joining Mussolini’s secret police, he is assigned to murder a former college professor and anti-Fascist intellectual now living in exile in France.
