Ashgar Farhadi, director of A Separation and The Past and Oscar winning The Salesman, crafts a compelling melodrama of morality and honour. Rahim, a divorced father who has just been released from jail on a two-day parole, hatches a plan to repay his debt and secure his release. After his girlfriend gives him a bag of gold coins that she says she found on a bus, Rahim attempts to sell them in the hopes of yielding enough money to clear his debt. Yet, when things don’t quite go to plan, what unfolds is a complex web of moral and real-world consequences. This richly textured and reflective film won the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival 2021.
