Jia Zhang-Ke dissects the dissonances of 21st-century China with a winding tale of love, disillusionment and survival. Qiao is in love with Bin, a local mobster. During a fight between rival gangs, she takes the blame to save Bin. Qiao gets five years in prison for this act of loyalty. Upon her release, she goes looking for Bin to pick up where they left off, only to realise that life has gone on without her. In competition at the last year’s Cannes Film Festival.
