POL /GER | 2020 | dir. Malgorzata Szumowska, with Alec Utgoff, Maja Ostaszewska, Agata Kulesza, Weronika Rosati
On a gray, foggy morning outside a large Polish city, a masseur from Ukraine named Zhenia (Alec Utgoff) enters the lives of the wealthy residents of a gated community. With his hypnotic presence and almost-magical abilities, he visits the well-to-do residents in their cookie-cutter suburban homes, who suffer from illnesses and sometimes just from general melancholia. The attractive and mysterious newcomer’s hands heal, and his eyes seem to penetrate their souls. Poland’s Official Submission to the 93rd Academy Awards, Malgorzata Szumowska’s Never Gonna Snow Again is a unique and unclassifiable meditation on class, immigration, and history painterly shot with touches of the otherworldly and moments of unexpected humour.
