BAFTA winning director Sarah Gavron (Brick Lane, Suffragette) returns with her eagerly anticipated third feature uniquely crafted by an almost all-female creative team in collaboration with mostly first-time actors, and written by Theresa Ikoko (winner of the Alfred Fagon award in 2015 for her play Girls) and Claire Wilson (Little Drummer Girl, Gangs of London, The Power). When their mother leaves her and her little brother Emmanuel to fend for themselves, the 15-year-old Rocks fears that they might be separated and taken into care by the authorities. Against all odds, she evades the threat and navigates the most defining days of her young life.
The core group of British girls involved in this collaborative project – coming from differing cultural backgrounds including Nigerian, Somali, Polish, Bangladeshi, English and Congolese-Ghanaian – emerged out of extensive workshops in which they generously shared experiences of friendship, their cultures, social media and school life as part of the filmmaking process.
