Written jointly by the director and by legendary screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière, who worked with Buñuel in many of his films, including Belle de jour and Tristana, The Artist and the Model is a meditation on mortality and artistic inspiration. It focuses on the encounter between Mercè, a young woman who has left behind a war-torn Spain, and an old French sculptor when she starts to model for him. Benefiting from Daniel Vilar’s beautiful black and white photography and the nuanced performances of veterans Rochefort, Cardinale and Lampreave contrasting with Folch’s youth and freshness, the film won Trueba the Best Director Award last year in San Sebastián.
