ITA/FRA/BRA/DEU/SWE/USA | 2017 | 108 mins | dir. Jonas Carpignano, with Pio Amato, Koudous Seihon, Damiano Amato
Jonas Carpignano’s The Ciambra offers a rarely seen on screen immersion in a small Romani community in Calabria, sharing uneasily the life of the local Italians, and African immigrants. Following in the footsteps of his older brother Cosimo, 14-year-old Pio is desperate to grow up fast, learning the necessary skills to survive on the streets. When Cosimo disappears and things start to go wrong, Pio sets out to prove he’s ready to step into his big brother’s shoes and become a man. The Ciambra won the Label Europa Cinemas Award at the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes 2017.
The screening on Fri 15 June is part of the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight 50th Anniversary season.
