Set towards the close of WWII, the film follows the journey of a boy entrusted by his Jewish parents to an elderly foster mother in an effort to escape persecution. Following a tragedy, the boy is soon on his own and wanders through the desecrated countryside. Beautifully shot in 35mm and in black & white, The Painted Bird has been deemed ‘a monumental piece of work’ by Xan Brooks in The Guardian.
