John Trengove’s debut feature, The Wound, explores masculinity and repressed sexuality in the remote mountains of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. The teenage boys of the Xhosa community are initiated into manhood through a circumcision ritual followed by two weeks healing, during which each initiate is assigned an elder. When a defiant initiate from the city discovers his best kept secret, Xolani’s entire existence begins to unravel.
