Via the reminiscences of the players themselves as well as archival sports footage, Julien Faraut’s (John McEnroe: In the Realm of Perfection) sports documentary recounts the story of the Japanese women’s volleyball team that caught their nation’s imagination in the early 60s and triumphed in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. The incredible success of this female team from an Osaka textile factory, in the historical context of Japan’s post-war resurgence and its rivalry with the USSR, transformed them into pop stars and sparked a vogue for volleyball-themed anime.
