Living in Mauritania, working in a beauty salon and addicted to social media, Verida is a modern girl. Still she is betrothed to a man chosen by her family, and how tradition dictates, she is forced-fed to gain a substantial amount of weight to become voluptuous and thus become an ideal of beauty and wealth. As the wedding approaches, meal after meal, Verida challenges her life, her traditions and not least her own body.
“Unusual and distinctive dramatisation of young woman’s ‘preparation’ for marriage in the unique culture of Mauritania” – Adrian Wootton, curator of Cinema Made in Italy, CEO of Film London and the British Film Commission
Followed by a Q&A with director Michela Occhipinti
