Verida is a modern Mauritanian girl who spends her time working in her grandmother’s beauty salon and hanging out with her friends. However, despite her apparent social freedom, she is engaged to be married to a man chosen by her family and is forced to gain a substantial amount of weight in a tradition called gavage. In her culture, having a voluptuous body is considered a sign of great beauty, charm, and social status. As the wedding fast approaches, she begins resenting and challenging everything she always thought was normal: her over-bearing family, her constricted life, and not least her own body.
